CHAPTER SIX
‘I’M all right!’ She struck at his hand and tried to squirm out of his grasp. ‘Don’t do that!’
He was dusting her down and quizzing one of her knees which had started to bleed.
‘Come along, I’ll take you indoors while you are still in one piece.’ Gripping her by the elbow, the Don proceeded to walk her across the courtyard and into the hall. ‘Attend to that scraped knee before you start nursing someone else,’ he ordered. ‘Can you manage the stairs without falling down them, you little bat?’
‘I-I’d have my glasses if it wasn’t for you.’ She dragged free of him and gave him a stormy look from beneath a tousled wing of hair. ‘I hope Candice doesn’t have some kind of reaction from being so scared by what you put her through.’
‘Did I scare you?’ he asked, looking amused rather than contrite.
‘Of course I was scared. I didn’t know what you were up to.’
‘No, you assumed that I was going to see the pair of you drown like unwanted kittens. Your opinion of me isn’t very charitable, is it? Well, I don’t think your sister has come to much harm—quite the reverse. Take a little more care of yourself, Nurse, and don’t forget to put some iodine on that knee.’
His eyes raked her up and down, then he turned on his heel and strode off in the direction of his study. Dominique made her way upstairs, holding wearily to the banister rail. Her knees hurt and her muscles ached and she felt all churned up inside. Life in the vicinity of Don Presidio was about as tranquil as living in a cage with a tiger. His vigour and challenge seemed to stir the air and bring to the surface the feelings she had submerged since those days when she’d watch Candice go off to dance while she settled down to cheese on toast and the nurses’ manual.
Dominique entered her room and was glad to shut the world outside for a short while. She sank down on the bed, removed her sandals and reached for a Kleenex so she could wipe the blood from her knee.
The events of the morning persisted in her thoughts… she couldn’t seem to forget the struggle to get Candy on her feet, nor finding herself in a man’s arms and so weak in contrast to his strength. Her mind held a vivid image of those moments when she had hung there in the sinewy brown arms, her heart hammering and any cry she might have given choked off by the crush of his lips on hers. She still seemed to feel the aquiline thrust of his nose against her face, the determined way he held her to his hard body, the reckless force with which he had kissed her.
She ran a finger back and forth across her bottom lip, she felt the sensitivity there and a resurgence of the disturbances which contact with his firm flesh and hard bones had brought to life in the quiet cloisters of her body.
